Why Am I Running for Congress?
I am tired of seeing our elected leaders ignore the will of the people as they take our country in a dangerous direction. I decided I could wring my hands and complain about it, or I could get involved and do something about it. While I have long been interested in politics, I never had the desire to be in politics until recently. I have spent my career in the private sector because that is where the true work of America is done. Government's job is to protect the unalienable rights of the people and provide an environment where the rule of law reigns and private property rights are secure. Beyond that, the best thing the Federal government can do is get out of the way and let the people pursue life, liberty, and property unfettered.
Background
I have had the opportunity to live in many different places throughout my life, including overseas. I graduated high school from the International School of Kenya in Nairobi, Kenya. Later in my own career my family and I lived and worked in Bangkok, Thailand. Both of these were tremendous learning experiences for me; and, as much as I enjoyed living overseas, I gained a special appreciation for being an American and living in the United States of America.
In my career I have worked for companies large and small, in several important industries; primarily, Telecommunications and Finance. I have seen how free market capitalism provides powerful incentives to individuals to innovate, take risks, and create wealth, as long as they are allowed to succeed and keep the fruits of their labors. I have also seen how government interference, in a misguided attempt to insulate people from the risks and realities of capitalism, distorts the proper operation of free market mechanisms (read more about this issue in the "Guiding Principles" section).
I graduated from Brigham Young University in 1989 with a degree in Economics. After a few years in the Banking Industry I returned to school and earned my MBA from the Goizueta Business School of Emory University. From there I spent eight years in the Telecommunications industry with AT&T and Lucent Technologies. I was there for the good times and the bad, and in 2003, left to come to Arizona where I co-founded a Financial Advisory firm with a couple of partners. I sold that business just over two years ago.
I make my living today as an independent options trader. I am fortunate to have a profession that affords me the flexibility to run for public office. I am also fortunate to have a skill set that allows me to earn a living even in a bad economy, when so many others have unfortunately lost their livelihoods. I have no doubt that reducing the size and scope of government, coupled with tax reductions that allow Americans to keep and spend more of what they earn, will provide the quickest path to economic recovery and job growth in this country.
Family
My wife Camille and I have been married almost 21 years. We have three beautiful children, Samantha (15), Emory (13), and Miranda (10). We live in Gilbert where we are active in the LDS church, as well as a host of other activities. In any given week Camille can be found teaching group fitness classes at the local gym, the girls are likely practicing or performing in one production or another, and Emory is active in Boy Scouts.
My Commitment
I am committed to representing the people of Arizona's 6th District in the People's House of Representatives with honesty and integrity. I further commit to maintain open and ongoing communication, such that the people of this district can feel confident their voices are being heard and represented in Washington, D.C. for as long as they see fit to honor me as their representative. Lastly, I commit to being a passionate and vocal leader in Congress for constitutional principles and conservative values.
